Teaching Philosophy

The teaching philosophy at the Ana Maria Eckstein Piano Studio is learner-centered, focusing on the individual student’s learning style and developing a routine of daily practice and classical technique. Students as young as four or five years of age begin to learn musical theory and performance through teaching materials especially suited to their age group. Repertoire is chosen in conjunction with students, in order to speak to their interests, complement their strengths, and address their weaknesses. More advanced students improve their technique through classical repertoire. Students continue to study music theory thoroughly, allowing them to understand the nuances of style and form and intelligently interpret the composer’s intent. By the time of performance, students understand their music thoroughly on all levels—muscular, aural, and intellectual.
Students may participate in the Certificate of Merit program, a ten-year evaluation program provided by the Music Teachers’ Association of California. Those students who achieve a high proficiency in performance may also perform in a number of festivals and competitions. Besides gaining valuable performance experience, students who are selected for competition regularly place in the top tier of competitors. For those who wish to submit portfolios for scholarships or college admissions, video and audio recording is provided on site. Ultimately, for devoted students, studying the piano teaches more than musical performance: it also gives lessons in personal discipline, time management, professional deportment, public presentation, personal expression, and self-esteem.
